Andrea and Kenney met in 2006 at preschool and have been friends ever since. Kennedy enjoys traveling and spending days on a lake or by a pool. She was born with a condition called Goldenhar Syndrome which affects facial features, the skeleton, and organs. She sees countless specialists at Duke Children’s Hospital and has had 24 surgeries, many of which were at Duke. With this lifelong journey, she has seen the impact Duke Children’s has had on herself, several kids she has met at various events, and every kid who walks through the doors.

Andrea is an avid volleyball player and competitive curler. She was always a healthy and active person. Little did she know that after 6 years of supporting Duke Children’s through this tournament, she would need them as well. In June of 2019, at 17 years old, she was diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer. After several appointments, it was decided that Duke was the best place for her treatment. With this new journey, the tournament has an even deeper purpose to both Andrea and Kennedy as they now have another reason to give back.

About Andrea and Kennedy

About Dig For Duke

In 2013, at 11 years old, Andrea and Kennedy decided that they wanted to do something together that would benefit the community. They decided that they would take Andrea’s love for volleyball and use it to give back to a place that majorly impacted Kennedy’s life, Duke Children’s Hospital. They created a non-profit 501c3 charity called Dig For Duke and held their first tournament in 2014.

Dig For Duke: raises money for Duke Children's Hospital, encourages people of all ages to enjoy volleyball, and introduces youth to community service by running their own non-profit organization.
